K3 directional drilling1/27/2024 “Over time, we’ve been able to help document previously undocumented utility lines using GPS and diligent potholing,” Krantz added. K3 first had to locate old and unmarked utilities running under the parks using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). Given all the obstacles on theme park properties, it can take a little longer to plan and complete a job there. The Vermeer R250C reclaimer was more convenient to operate and outperformed the other unit, so we bought it.” Getting to work After the first day, it was an easy decision for us. “It was a contractor’s dream scenario – two systems onsite running the same material and using the same drilling fluid pump. “At the beginning of the job, we were just demoing the R250C, along with another recycling system,” Krantz explained. With a backlog of large-diameter work, Krantz felt the timing was right to invest in a reclaimer that could help control his fluid management expenses, and the Walt Disney World project is where he first put the R250C to work. “We’re near the Florida Everglades, so there aren’t a lot of options, and it can get expensive to dispose of drilling fluids, especially on these large-diameter water and sewer jobs.” “Finding a dumpsite around Southern Florida is a real challenge,” he stated. “I bought our older D100x140 rig used when we first started three years ago, and we put a lot of hours on it – around 1,200 per year, so it was time to retire it,” Krantz said.Īlong with the new HDD unit, Krantz also added a Vermeer R250C reclaimer to help reduce the volume of drilling fluid that needed to be disposed of. Upgradeįor the water bridge project, K3 upgraded from an older D100x140 HDD to the latest S3 model. K3’s Vermeer drill fleet includes two new units – D100x140 S3 and D40x55 S3 Navigator drills – as well as a D60x90 Series II and two D20x40 Series II Navigator drills, and a D9x13 Navigator drill. Spaced about 10 feet apart, each bore is roughly 1,100 feet long and 60-to-80-feet deep through some rock formations. On this particular project, K3 Directional Drilling installed two, 18-inch water mains to run water to the bridge and a 16-inch reclaiming line to help circulate the water. “All of the work is done at night – the third shift.” “We’ve done 2-, 4- and 6-inch electrical installs for new roller coaster rides and attractions at the parks,” he explained. According to K3 Directional Drilling Vice President Lewis Krantz, his team executes a lot of water, sewer and electrical installations at Walt Disney World. The Stuart, Fla.-based, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) company is responsible for many of the utility upgrades at the Orlando Walt Disney World theme parks. It can also be equipped with more environmentally friendly and energy-saving engine. In the wee hours of the morning, long before the sun comes up and tourists line up to visit “The Happiest Place on Earth,” the crew of K3 Directional Drilling Inc., was working on installing new water lines to the water bridge at Walt Disney World Resort, where ferry boats float over buses. The whole machine can be equipped with automatic (semi-automatic) pipe loader, double automatic anchoring device, mud antifreeze, mud cleaning device, etc. The configuration is flexible and diverse. High/low speed push-pull and rotation system in which the variable piston motor achieves the high/low push-pull speed of power head improves the ability to adapt to various working conditions and improves the construction efficiency of the drilling rig. Patented technology of power head floating and vise floating can greatly protect the drill pipe thread to increase the service life of the drill pipe.
